Obituary for Gloria Foley

Early on Monday, October 29, 2018, Gloria Foley, 93, of Lovington, took the hand of Jesus and received a big hug from John as she entered the gates of Heaven.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2018, at the Lovington United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Lovington. Burial will be in Keller Cemetery, Lovington. Memorials are suggested to Cunningham Children’s Home: PO Box 878 Urbana, IL 61803 or to the Lovington United Methodist Church.
Gloria was born July 4, 1925 in St. Louis, MO, to Walter A.E. and Martha (Hambacker) Appenbrink. She graduated from Blue Mound high school in 1943 and Illinois State University in 1947. She moved to Lovington where she taught Home Economics until retiring in 1980.
On July 27, 1952 (which remains the hottest July 27th on record at 108 degrees!) she married John K. Foley at the Lovington United Methodist Church, and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1994. Gloria was a very active member of the church for many years, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, running the kitchen and even becoming a lay speaker. She was also very involved in the community, and was a charter member of the Lovington Women’s Club. She served as District President of the Untied Methodist Women, as well as District President of the American Legion Auxiliary. A fifty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she served as Worthy Matron and held many other offices throughout the years. During her tenure as District President of the United Methodist Women, she also served on the board of Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana- a place very near and dear to her heart. She was a member of the Moultrie County Home Extension Board and the Lovington Library Board as well. After retiring from teaching she became a volunteer EMT for several years.
Gloria enjoyed cooking, sewing, and was particularly fond of quilting, spending many Wednesday mornings at the church with her good friends “the quilters.” She was very devoted to her family and adored her grandchildren.
John passed away June 17, 1994 and Gloria leaves behind her son, John (Susan) of Palatine, IL, daughter, Sally (Ray) Duncan of Decatur, IL, three grandchildren, Alex Foley (Fiancée Annie Nordin) of Palatine, IL, Jennifer Leviton (Ryan) of Palatine, IL, and Eric Foley (Gabrielle) of Zionsville, IN; step-grandchildren, Angela (Dan) Pacilio of Carmel, IN, and Brien Duncan of Sullivan; along with 5 step-great-grandchildren. She also leaves a brother Paul Appenbrink of Seattle, WA, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family, as well as her dear friend and caregiver Darlene Gallion. Also missing Gloria will be her special cat, Muffin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Walter Jr. and David, as well as her sister Edna Mae Carr.
